Sprints, jumps, or throws. Which athletic discipline do you identify with the most?
Athletics encompasses various disciplines grouped into categories such as running, jumping, and throwing. Although it is considered the oldest organized sport in the world, its disciplines have evolved over time.
It’s worth noting that it’s also one of the most international sports, practiced worldwide. This success is likely due to its simplicity, as it doesn’t require extensive equipment.
What disciplines does athletics include?
Below, we’ll briefly review all the disciplines within athletics. We offer all of them at the Tenerife Athletics Center.
Running:
Middle-distance running. This refers to races of medium distance, which are contested between 400 and 3,000 meters, although only the 800 and 1,500-meter races are included in the Olympic Games and World Championships.
Long-distance running. Long-distance races are those that exceed 3,000 meters. This includes marathons and cross-country races.
Hurdles. In this case, we can find events ranging from the 60-meter hurdles to the 3,000-meter hurdles.
Relay: The objective is to cover a certain distance as quickly as possible while carrying a wooden or metal cylinder (baton) and passing it from one athlete to another. This event can be 4×100 meters or 4×400 meters and consists of four athletes per team.
Race Walking:
A distance must be covered in the shortest possible time, but always walking, never running. That is, one foot must always be in contact with the ground. In this case, we find a 20 km and a 50 km option.
Jumps: Jumps consist of leaping off the ground with momentum and landing in the same place or another. Within this discipline, we find the following categories:
Long Jump
Triple Jump
High Jump
Pole Vault
Throws: This consists of throwing a specific object as far as possible. We find the following categories:
Shot Put
Discus Throw
Hammer Throw
Javelin Throw
Finally, we can find combined events, such as the decathlon. In any case, at CIAT we not only have qualified facilities for practicing each and every discipline of athletics, but we also have the best professionals teaching the activities designed to help you learn from scratch.
