Everything you need to know about shot put

Athletics encompasses different disciplines that, while we’ve all heard of them at some point, we don’t always really know what the sport entails. At the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT), we are experts in the field, and that’s why today we want to delve a little deeper into the shot put.

The shot put, also known as the bullet throw, is a track and field event that consists of throwing a solid steel ball as far as possible. This discipline began as stone throwing, but in 1857 the British wanted to establish a standard and used 16-pound (7.257 kg) cannonballs. Therefore, the shot put is also known as the bullet throw.

In fact, these standards have been maintained, as the solid shot put used today weighs 7.26 kg for men and 4 kg for women.

What is shot put and how can we get started?

The shot put must be thrown from inside a circular area, towards a marked area. There are some fundamental rules, such as:
