Athletics is a sport that requires a lot of physical effort. To enjoy the sport, one of the most important things is undoubtedly to take care of our health, that is, both body and mind. From the Tenerife Island Athletics Center (CIAT), today we would like to talk about one of the most common physical health problems among runners: plantar fasciitis.
It manifests as a sharp pain in the foot, generally directly in the heel. It is usually more bothersome during the first steps of the morning, although it is essential to treat it in time to prevent it from becoming chronic.
Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot (plantar fascia), connecting the heel bone to the toes.
It is important to treat it promptly to prevent it from becoming chronic, so we must pay attention to its symptoms, which are mainly sharp, stabbing pain in the sole of the foot, near the heel. As we have said, it is generally more intense during the first steps in the morning, although it can also increase when we have been standing for a long time or when we get up after a long period of sitting. In the case of athletes, the pain usually worsens after training, not during it.
Why is it more common in runners? The plantar fascia is the tissue that supports the arch of the foot and absorbs the impact when walking. When this applied tension is too great, small tears occur in the fascia, causing inflammation.
At the first sign of any symptom, it is essential to consult a specialist to determine if it is plantar fasciitis or another condition, thus preventing more serious problems. At CIAT, we provide you with the best facilities and scheduled activities, but proper footwear and taking care of your health are ultimately up to you.
