Returning to athletics after a break

Monday, 05 September 2022

September is the month of “back to school,” even for adults. It’s a month of restarting, of resuming, of returning to routine after a few months of inactivity during the summer. Returning to athletics—or any other sport—is common during this month, but it’s essential to know how to do it to avoid injuries and, above all, to regain motivation.

Routine is fundamental to organizing our daily lives. That’s why it’s important to gradually adapt to everything the new month brings. When we combine exercise with nutrition and other healthy lifestyle habits, it seems much easier to get back into a routine.

At the Tenerife Athletics Center, we have an excellent professional team in our group classes who will know how to approach this return to sport after a prolonged period of inactivity. However, if you’re someone who practices outdoor sports, let’s look at some fundamental tips for getting back into a training routine while avoiding injuries.

How to get back into athletics after summer

Start slowly.Remembering the times we achieved a few months ago will motivate us to know where we need to go, but we can’t expect to recover our best times in two days. The body’s muscles need to be retrained to be at 100%, so it’s best to start with gentle workouts and gradually increase them.

Strengthening exercises.Doing strength exercises will help us prepare our muscles and avoid injuries.

Warm-up and stretching. Take your time to warm up properly before each workout.

Healthy eating.Your body will need to readjust to exercise, and a healthy diet will make it much easier.

At CIATthe best facilities for practicing athletics in Tenerife also await you. We look forward to seeing you!
