Stretching: Why is it so important?

Wednesday, 20 July 2022

When we exercise, we subject our bodies to stress that they need to prepare for. Therefore, it’s essential to stretch before and after our workout. This will help warm up our muscles and thus improve physical performance, prevent injuries, and even avoid those annoying muscle aches.

It’s important to understand that there are no stretches that work equally well for everyone. It will always depend on the physical activity we’re going to do and also on each person’s individual body. Although at CIAT we are athletes par excellence, today we want to talk about the importance of stretching in general, regardless of the sport we practice.

Why is stretching important when we do sports?
We prevent injuries and increase our body’s potential. Our body’s performance will be greater because the muscles will be more flexible. Furthermore, when we warm up the muscles, we are preparing them for changes in intensity, thus preventing injuries.

Afterwards, we relax the muscles. When we stretch after exercising, we relax the muscles, reducing muscle soreness and improving circulation. It also gives us a pleasant and relaxed feeling.

Long-term benefits. It’s proven that stretching has long-term benefits such as increasing our agility and flexibility, so it’s important to dedicate a few minutes a day to it, even when we’re not exercising.

Stretching before and after training should be different, as we want to achieve a different goal with each. Before training, we should perform dynamic stretches that increase our body temperature. After training, on the other hand, we should do static stretches, which help us relax our muscles and release tension. In any case, in the scheduled activities we have at CIAT, we provide all the necessary tools to get started in athletics, including, of course, basic stretching for practicing this type of sport.
