How to prepare for an athletics competition for beginners: tips and strategies

Wednesday, 16 August 2023

At the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT), we offer training in various athletic disciplines. This sport, like so many others, requires perseverance and effort to surpass our own goals. But today, we also want to talk about another very important aspect: specific preparation for a competition.

A competition is a very enriching experience, both physically and mentally. However, we not only need the appropriate physical preparation, but we also need to consider other key factors that influence the outcome of the competition.

Basic Tips Before an Athletics Competition

  • Clear Objectives. Before starting any training plan, it is important for the athlete to have clear and realistic objectives. What do they want to achieve in the competition? Improve a personal best, win a medal, or simply enjoy the experience? Setting concrete and achievable goals will provide clear direction and constant motivation throughout your training.

Training Planning. Proper and structured training is essential for improving athletic performance. Work with a coach or athletics specialist to design a training plan that suits your needs and goals. Include exercises specific to the disciplines in which you will compete, as well as strength, speed, endurance, and flexibility training to develop a solid foundation.

Nutrition. Nutrition plays a crucial role in athletic performance. Ensure you consume a balanced and nutritious diet that includes protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Stay properly hydrated before, during, and after training, and avoid unhealthy foods that can negatively impact your performance.

Rest and Recovery. Rest is essential to allow your body to recover, assimilate, and strengthen itself after training. Don’t underestimate the importance of getting enough sleep to maintain good physical and mental health. Plan rest days in your training program and, in the week leading up to the competition, reduce the intensity of your workouts to arrive fresh and in top form on the day of the event.

Positive mindset. Mental preparation is just as important as physical preparation. Practice visualization techniques to imagine success and overcome any obstacles you may face in the competition. Maintain a positive mindset and have confidence in your training and abilities. Managing stress and anxiety will help you stay focused and concentrated during the competition.

Competition familiarization. Conducting mock competitions will help you feel more comfortable and confident on the day of the event. Familiarize yourself with the facilities and conditions in which you will be competing, so there are no unpleasant surprises. Practice your warm-up and pre-race routines so they become second nature on race day.

At CIAT, we work with all these concepts from the very beginning and support students in achieving their goals. If you’d like to get involved in athletics, we welcome you with open arms.
