Adapted and accessible athletics for all

Wednesday, 26 June 2024

Adapted athletics has its roots in the Paralympic movement, which dates back to the 1940s. It is a type of sport that offers people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in a variety of athletic disciplines adapted to their needs.

The organization is divided into different categories depending on the type of disability the participants have, which can be intellectual, physical, or cognitive. It encompasses a wide range of disciplines such as sprints and endurance races, long jump and high jump, and discus, javelin, and shot put, among many others.

Each discipline must be properly adapted to the needs of each athlete to guarantee their full participation. For this purpose, specially designed wheelchairs, prostheses, or even visual aids can be used.

Disability is not an obstacle for true athletes

Before competing, each athlete undergoes an evaluation and classification based on their type of disability and functional abilities, always focused on the sport in which they wish to participate. This classification ensures fair competitions and that competing athletes have a similar level of skill. This helps preserve the values of equitable competition and sportsmanship.

The Tenerife Athletics Center is an adapted facility where everyone can enjoy this sport, develop their athletic skills, and compete in an environment that highlights the importance of diversity and inclusion.
