The Tenerife Bluetrail 2021 will debut a 3.1-kilometer nighttime vertical race

The Tenerife Bluetrail, the mountain race organized by the Island Council through the public company Ideco, will debut a new nighttime vertical race this year, to be held on June 3rd. This new event, in which 150 runners will participate, will cover a distance of 3.1 kilometers from Calle del Medio (Los Realejos) to the summit of Asomadero.

The Island Councilor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, explains that “this is one of the main new features of the upcoming edition of the Tenerife Bluetrail, which will also celebrate its tenth anniversary, having become one of the most attractive mountain races on the national and international scene, not only for its technical challenge, but also for crossing a World Heritage Site like Teide National Park.”

Rivero highlights the interest among athletes in participating in the vertical race, which has already sold out half of its available spots. “This very demanding race will also have the added challenge of taking place at night along a legendary climb of the Tenerife Bluetrail, the Asomadero. This will allow spectators in the Orotava Valley to see the athletes’ headlamps as they ascend the vertical face to a height of over 1,000 meters.”

Participants in the vertical race will start near El Medio Street in the municipality of Los Realejos, enter the La Lora ravine, and finish at the finish line located at the Asomadero. The course, with a total elevation gain of 746 meters, runs almost entirely along trails.

The Tenerife Bluetrail, to be held from June 3 to 5, 2021, will feature seven race options for its tenth anniversary: the Ultra, a 105-kilometer race; the Trail, a 71-kilometer race with a relay option; the Marathon, a 42-kilometer race; the Half Marathon, a 20-kilometer race; the Bluetrail Challenge for people with disabilities, which includes three distances of 8, 3.7, and 1.2 kilometers; and a nighttime vertical race.

Health Protocols

The race, which has already sold 81% of its places, will adhere to strict health protocols in each of its race categories. Limiting the number of participants, reducing the event’s capacity by 50 percent, and restructuring race times to avoid overlapping on trails and at aid stations are some of the measures included in the race’s COVID protocol.

In addition, all runners will be required to carry a face mask to use when necessary, such as on official runner transport, at the start and finish lines, or wherever the organizers determine.

However, all health protocols will be updated according to the evolution of the pandemic and the guidelines issued by health authorities in June.

The Tenerife Bluetrail 2021 is supported by companies such as Fred. Olsen, Hospiten, Physiorelax, Isola Frutos Secos que Acompañan, Cajamar, Libby’s Canarias, and La Fast.
