The event, which is free of charge, will take place on Saturday, the 4th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Next Saturday, May 4, the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT) will host an event as part of the “Women and Sports” series dedicated to “Getting Started in Running, ” a sport that is currently booming in popularity and is highly accessible, flexible, and convenient to practice, since it does not require a specific schedule, space, or equipment.
The workshop, led by Tenerife-based athletes Diana de la Rosa Jorge and Teresa Linares Hernández, aims to teach women how to run properly and follow a correct progression, provide them with tools to plan their workouts, and offer guidelines for preventing the most common injuries in this sport.
The Cabildo’s “Women and Sports” program will organize four introductory sports activities in May, one each Saturday. This initiative, which aims to introduce women ages 14 and older to physical activity and sports and is celebrating its fifth year this year, takes place on Saturday mornings at various sports facilities across the island and will run through June.
Following the event at CIAT, an “Introduction to Hiking and Mountain Running” workshop will take place on Saturday , May 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Las Raíces (El Rosario). This is a new program being introduced for the first time this year, designed to help participants plan a mountain outing safely and independently, while prioritizing health and preventing the most common injuries associated with this activity among women, such as pelvic floor issues. The instructors will be Sara Suárez García, a physical education and sports instructor, and Verónica Sobrado Queijo, a mid-mountain sports specialist and accredited guide for Teide National Park.
On Saturday , May 18, it will be time for another new activity: an introduction to the “Acuathlon, ” a sport that combines two widely practiced and health-beneficial activities—running and swimming—into a single discipline through specific transitions. The event will take place at Las Teresitas Beach from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and the instructors leading the session will once again be Diana de la Rosa Jorge, a physical education and sports instructor, and Teresa Linares Hernández, an international athlete and recipient of the Canary Islands Government’s Medal of Sporting Merit.
On the last Saturday of May, a new session of “Pelvic Floor and Hypopressive Exercises” will be held in response to the high demand generated by previous workshops on this topic. The third and final session of this series will take place in the northern region, at the El Mayorazgo Sports Complex in La Orotava, on Saturday, the 25th. There will be two sessions: a beginner-level session (at 9:00 a.m.) and an advanced-level session (at 11:00 a.m.), the latter aimed at those who have had some prior experience with pelvic floor exercises or have practiced hypopressive exercises.
Strengthening the pelvic floor is essential for women of all ages, since every time we walk, run, or lift weights, our muscles weaken. Proper pelvic floor training helps prevent and treat urinary incontinence, improves sexual relations, corrects posture, and strengthens the muscles during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. These workshops are led by Sara Suárez García and Aroa Álvarez González, who hold degrees in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and specialize in training programs designed for women.
All events are free of charge and have limited space, so advance registration is required on the Tenerife Island Council’s Sports Department website. Registration for each activity will open on the Monday of the week prior to the event.
