Miguel Heras and Nerea Martínez, the 2011 winners of the Ultra category, want to repeat the experience to coincide with the race’s 10th anniversary
The winners of the first edition of the Fred. Olsen Tenerife Bluetrail, Miguel Heras and Nerea Martínez, will be competing in the race again this year. Both athletes, who won the Ultra division in their respective categories in 2011, have decided to repeat the experience to coincide with the 10th anniversary of this event, organized by the Tenerife Island Council.
That first race, which marked the beginning of Fred’s national and international rise to prominence. Olsen Tenerife Bluetrail, establishing it as one of the most attractive races in its category, featured a shorter distance, less elevation gain, and a course with a higher percentage of paved surfaces—and it did not include the ascent of Mount Teide.
Joining Miguel Heras and Nerea Martínez are two-time trail running world runner-up Cristofer Clemente, a native of La Gomera, who will be running the Fred for the first time. Olsen Tenerife Bluetrail; Azara García de los Salmones from Cantabria, who won the Ultra category in 2018; the 2016 champion, Sange Sherpa from Nepal; and Yeray Durán from Gran Canaria, a three-time champion of the race.
The Fred. Olsen Tenerife Bluetrail, which will take place on June 6, will feature seven race categories in its upcoming edition: the Ultra, at 103 kilometers; the Trail, at 71 kilometers, which also includes a relay category; the Marathon, at 44 kilometers; the Half, covering a distance of 20 kilometers; the Bluetrail Challenge for people with disabilities, which includes three distances of 8, 3.7, and 1.2 kilometers; and a new 3.1-kilometer nighttime vertical race that will take place on June 4 in the town of Los Realejos.
The organization has set a limit of 3,000 runners for this race, which is part of the Spanish Mountain Running Cup, the 2020 Skyrunner National Series, and is included in the Alpinultras Circuit, the most technical and demanding in the country.
The Tenerife event will once again award points from the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) in all its categories, which are valid for the UTMB. Thus, the Ultra category (103 km) will be worth 5 points, while the Trail category (71 km) will be worth 3 points, the Marathon (44 km) 2 points, and the Half Marathon (20 km) 1 point. Two points will also be awarded to each participant in the Trail relay category.
The Fred. Olsen Tenerife Bluetrail is sponsored by Turismo de Tenerife, Promotur, Fred. Olsen Express, and Hospiten, with the support of Fonteide, Physiorelax, Coca-Cola, Libby’s, Donuts, and Isola Frutos Secos.
