The Tenerife Bluetrail is expanding its lineup with three new races for families, children, and joëlettes

Registration is now open for the race, which will take place June 8–10

The Tenerife Bluetrail, organized by the Cabildo through Ideco and scheduled to take place from June 8 to 10, 2023, will debut three new categories aimed at families and children, as well as a course for joëlettes—special wheelchairs adapted for athletes with limited mobility. Registration has been open since October 1 via the website www.tenerifebluetrail.com

Up to 50 teams, each with a maximum of five members—including at least one adult and one child—may register for the 5.3-kilometer family race. Athletes in the joëlette race will cover the same distance , while the new 500-meter children’s race is for children under seven, who must be accompanied by an adult.

The other race categories will be the Ultra, at 102 kilometers; the Trail, covering a distance of 73 kilometers, which also includes a relay category with legs of 25 and 48 kilometers; the Marathon, with a total distance of 44 kilometers; the Half Marathon, covering a distance of 24 kilometers; the Night Vertical, at 5.25 kilometers; and the Bluetrail Challenge for people with disabilities, which includes three distances of 7.2, 5.3, and 1.2 kilometers.

The island’s Sports Minister, Concepción Rivero, notes that “after 11 editions, the race has become a model of sustainability that, in addition to its well-known attractions—such as being the highest race in Spain and one of the few to pass through a World Heritage Site— is further enhanced by its commitment to the environment and to safeguarding the fragile terrain through which it passes.”

Along these lines, Rivero particularly highlights “the coordination we’ve always maintained with the staff at Teide National Park to comply with all their guidelines regarding the carrying capacity of each area, as well as the limit on the number of participants to protect the highly sensitive environment through which the race passes—a measure that also makes it exclusive.”

The finish line for the Tenerife Bluetrail, which will pass through eight municipalities, will once again be located in Puerto de la Cruz. The race will follow the same routes as last year, with the marathon starting at the Plaza de la Basílica de Candelaria and the Vertical starting at Barranco Hondo and ending at Las Lagunetas.

The next edition of the race will feature a maximum of 3,400 runners, including the new categories, but the limit on the number of participants crossing Teide National Park remains in place to protect the area and ensure the quality of the race. The Ultra category will have 500 participants, the same as the Trail category, while the Half Marathon and Marathon will have 900 and 800 spots, respectively. The Trail Relay category will be reserved for 50 pairs, and the Vertical category has 150 spots.

The prices set by the organizers range from 10 euros for the Vertical (if participants also enter another event) to 135 euros for the Ultra. The Bluetrail Challenge and the joëlette race are free for participants.
