The island’s Sports Minister, Concepción Rivero, notes that work is being carried out on a total area of 6,400 square meters, including preparation, reseeding, and pest control measures that will leave the facility in optimal condition
The island’s Sports Minister, Concepción Rivero, announced today that the work to prepare, reseed, and apply pest control treatments to the turf at the Tenerife Island Athletics Center (CIAT) are nearing completion, and it will be available to users by the end of next January.
According to the councilor, who visited the CIAT facilities alongside the island’s director of sports, Laura Castro, “The renovation work is progressing at a good pace, and we expect the results to be excellent in meeting the needs of the athletes who will use the facility, primarily in the javelin, shot put, and discus events.” The total area covered by the project is 6,400 square meters.
Rivero recalls that “lawn maintenance was carried out irregularly, after years without a contract, with verbal extensions since 2015—a situation that ultimately led us to issue a public call for bids because it was unacceptable for things to continue that way.”
For her part, the island’s director of sports, Laura Castro, adds that “the facilities at the Island Athletics Center are open and fully operational, with all preventive and safety measures in place to combat COVID-19; the only thing left is to get the turf ready for use.”
Castro details some of the investments and improvements made at CIAT, such as closing the opening above the north garden, the access ramp to the indoor area, the renovation of the cardio gym equipment, the adaptation of signage and COVID-19 regulations, and a 60% increase in funding for cleaning as a safety measure, in addition to the repair of the throwing cage—including the replacement of its doors—and the purchase of specialized track and field equipment; in total, 233,434 euros were spent on all these projects.”
