The City Council wraps up Physical Activity and Health Month with the School Sports Meetings

On Tuesday, the Regional Minister of Sports, Yolanda Moliné, accompanied by David Crego, the Director General of School Administration and Enrollment for the Canary Islands Government, visited the first training camp, which took place at the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT) and involved five elementary schools from the area

The Tenerife Island Council’s Department of Sports is wrapping up Physical Activity and Health Month with three School Sports Meetings, which will bring together nearly 1,000 schoolchildren in the metropolitan area, the north, and the south during this final week of April. The first of these, which took place this Tuesday, April 28, at the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT) in Tíncer, was attended by the island government’s Sports Minister, Yolanda Moliné, and the Director General of School Administration and Enrollment for the Canary Islands Government, David Crego.

On this first day, more than 300 fifth- and sixth-grade students from five elementary schools in the area gathered: Julio Castillo Torroba, San Luis Gonzaga, Las Mercedes, Montaña Pacho, and Georgia Martín Hernández. As part of the Escuelas Activas program, all of these schools aim to reinforce the work they have been doing throughout the school year to promote healthy lifestyle habits through the“Multideporte”after-school program.

For her part, Yolanda Moliné notes that “these events are a special occasion for the children, as they can apply what they learn at school to a broader context, where they can play with peers from other schools on the island.” The councilor also thanked the local governments for their collaboration and concluded that “these gatherings are not competitions, but rather opportunities for social interaction, where physical activity becomes a means of promoting healthy lifestyle habits and positive relationships.”

The program will continue tomorrow , Wednesday, April 29, with schools from the southern part of the island, which will move to the Annex of the Antonio Domínguez Alfonso Stadium in the municipality of Arona. Next, to put the finishing touch on a month packed with initiatives centered on sports, the event will move to the northern part of the island. The Iván Ramallo Stadium in Los Realejos will host the final event of the School Sports Meetings this Thursday, April 30.
