The Cabildo will invest 2.3 million euros throughout 2025 to improve the CIAT

The Island Council plans to begin removing the track surface on the main track at the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT) on June 16 to replace it with a new one, a project representing an investment of 865,927 euros, which began in late April with the manufacturing and logistics of the materials.

Sports Councilor Yolanda Moliné explains that “we have previously met with representatives from the five local clubs to agree on the best date to begin construction, taking the competition schedule into account. In addition, the Island Council is reaching out to the managers of various facilities on the island so that athletes who regularly train at the CIAT can do so elsewhere while the work is underway—which may last up to four and a half months—and we are also keeping members of the sports schools and other users of the center informed. “This work is necessary to improve the facility and ensure that our athletes can train under the best conditions.”

The work on the track will also result in the cancellation this year of CIAT’s traditional summer camp, in which hundreds of children between the ages of 5 and 13 participate to get started in track and field and enjoy various activities.

Yolanda Moliné also points out that, in addition to the work on the main court, “over the course of this year, the Cabildo plans to invest a total of 2.3 million euros in the CIAT to carry out various projects that will help improve the facilities and equipment at this world-class sports center.”

Among the planned projects are the installation of a solar power plant—a project that is currently in the contracting phase—and the replacement of the lighting on the main court with LED technology, funded by the European Next Generation Fund.

The strength training equipment in the gym and the indoor area will also be replaced—a project currently in the bidding process—as will the seats in the stands. The work planned for this year will be completed with the installation of an additional throwing cage to complement the existing one.
