Women make up 26% of those registered for the half marathon

The 2022 Tenerife Bluetrail has already surpassed 2,000 registrants with just two months to go before the race—the highest number in Spain and one of the most iconic events on the national and international scene, both for its course and its technical demands. The organizers have set a total capacity of 2,900 runners for the seven categories included in the race, which this year is once again endorsed by the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), the most prestigious event in the sport.

The island’s Sports Minister, Concepción Rivero, confirms that so far 17% of women have registered for the race, “a percentage that confirms the interest the event has generated among female athletes and that rises to 26% for the half marathon.”

The next edition of the race, which will take place from June 2 to 5, will feature a maximum of 2,900 runners, but the limit on the number of participants crossing Teide National Park remains in place to protect the area and ensure the quality of the race. Given the success of the Trail Relay and Vertical categories, the number of available spots has been increased this year to 100 teams and 200 runners, respectively. The Ultra category will have 500 participants, the same as the Trail category, while the Half Marathon and Marathon have already filled their respective quotas of 700 spots each.

As for the participants’ ages, runners between the ages of 45 and 49 currently top the rankings, followed by those aged 40–44 and those over 50. In contrast, athletes between the ages of 20 and 30 are at the bottom of the registration list, bringing the average age of participants to 43.

Concepción Rivero also highlights the new features planned for the race, “which this year will debut new routes and schedules, as well as the Ultra race starting for the first time from El Médano Beach and the marathon starting from the Basilica of Candelaria, which will help showcase two of the island’s most iconic landmarks.”

The Sports Minister notes that the 2022 Tenerife Bluetrail “has been selected by the Spanish Federation of Mountain and Climbing Sports (FEDME) as one of the races that will determine the members of the Spanish national team who will compete in the upcoming World Championships in the Ultra category, a fact that will attract the best runners in the discipline.”

There will also be some new features in the nighttime vertical race, which will take place this year between Barranco Hondo and Las Lagunetas, covering a distance of 5.25 kilometers with an elevation gain of 990 meters.

The Tenerife Bluetrail, organized by the Cabildo through Ideco, will pass through the municipalities of Candelaria, La Matanza, La Victoria, and Santa Úrsula for the first time, where the race will traverse the so-called Bosquete de los Sanguinos, a landscape of great beauty and unique ecological value in the Canary Islands due to the characteristic tree species of the laurel forest that have clustered in this area, forming a distinctive and unusual forest. Vilaflor, La Orotava, Granadilla, and Puerto de la Cruz round out the list of municipalities that will host the 2022 edition.

This year’s Tenerife Bluetrail will feature seven categories: the Ultra, covering 102 kilometers; the Trail, covering 73 kilometers, which also includes a relay category with legs of 25 and 48 kilometers; the Marathon, covering a total distance of 44 kilometers; the Half, covering a distance of 24 kilometers; and the Bluetrail Challenge for people with disabilities, which includes three distances of

7.2, 5, and 1.2 kilometers, which coincide with the finish lines of all the races, as well as the 5.25-kilometer nighttime vertical race to be held on June 2.

The next edition of the race is sponsored by Fred. Olsen, Hospiten, Physiorelax, La Fast, Fonteide, Libby’s, Cajamar, and Coca-Cola.
