The course is designed to promote inclusive sports activities

The Tenerife Island Council, through the public company Ideco, is strengthening the training and specialization of professionals in inclusive sports through the strategy of the Plan for Physical Activity and Sports for Social Inclusion (PADIS) with a new edition of a specialized course taught by professors from the University of La Laguna (ULL).

The island’s Sports Minister, Yolanda Moliné, emphasizes that “In this edition, PADIS is once again devoting special attention to the training and professional development of coaches who work to promote inclusion through sports, with the aim of updating their skills and promoting teaching strategies that support this goal through a participatory and cross-cutting approach.”

For her part, the Councilor for Social Action, Águeda Fumero, points out that “sports serve as a tool for promoting social inclusion,” emphasizing that “all our policies are centered on equal opportunities for all people, and this requires a cross-cutting approach to governance, ensuring that all citizens can pursue the life they desire on an equal footing. The values of sports align with the Cabildo’s commitment to building a society that is increasingly egalitarian, inclusive, and based on solidarity.”

The training program, which is being carried out in collaboration with the ULL through the General Foundation, will take place from February 14 to June 30 in both online and in-person formats under the title “Physical and Sports Activities: Contexts of Social Inclusion.”

Some of the topics to be covered during the course’s more than 100 instructional hours include addressing diversity in sports, various methodological strategies, and interventions in physical activities and social inclusion for people with intellectual, sensory (visual and auditory), and motor disabilities, as well as those with mental health disorders, among others. These topics will be complemented by practical workshops throughout the program.

The Physical Activity and Sports Plan for Inclusion aims to implement an effective strategy that promotes balance and provides fair and equitable opportunities for people with disabilities through sports. The goal is to foster an attitude and provide appropriate tools that encourage an active lifestyle for everyone, regardless of their circumstances and in accordance with each person’s individual abilities.

The fourth edition of PADIS, which began in October, benefits more than 1,700 people from 94 centers across the island, marking an all-time high. This initiative by the Cabildo, managed by the public company Ideco, was recently recognized by the Canary Islands Association of Sports Management Professionals (Acagede) as the best sports program in the Canary Islands.
