Around fifty students from the school participated in the athletics competition last weekend

The Tenerife Island Council Games, organized by the Sports Department, returned to the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT) last weekend after a month-long hiatus due to restrictions imposed as part of the COVID-19 contingency plan. Around fifty students from the CIAT school enthusiastically participated in the various events of the competition, whose objective is to motivate young people to regularly practice some type of physical activity or sport.

The Island Councilor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, expressed her satisfaction that the Island Council Games were able to resume, “in which some 2,000 schoolchildren took part this weekend, and in which, moreover, water polo and basketball participants made their debuts, disciplines that had not yet started.”

After more than a month without competition, activity resumed with 12 sports: chess, volleyball and beach volleyball, badminton, handball, athletics, rhythmic gymnastics, taekwondo, table tennis, baseball, basketball, and water polo.

The Island Director of Sports, Laura Castro, noted that “with these games, the Tenerife Island Council aims to motivate young people to adopt an active lifestyle, in which the regular practice of some type of physical activity or sport plays a fundamental role.”

The Tenerife Island Council Games have become a valuable tool for promoting education, integration, solidarity, discipline, equality, sustainability, and camaraderie, becoming a multi-sport alternative in schools that, among other things, introduces the values of competition to young residents of Tenerife.
