The Tenerife Bluetrail will provide qualification for the Ultra World Championship

The next edition of the Tenerife Bluetrail, a mountain race organized by the Tenerife Island Council through Ideco, will be one of the key events in selecting the members of the Spanish team that will compete in the upcoming Ultra World Championships, to be held in the Italian city of Ossola from September 9th to 11th.

The Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing (FEDME) has confirmed the inclusion of the Tenerife Bluetrail race, along with the Trecacims race, which will take place in Paüls (Tarragona) on April 2nd, and the Perimetrail in Arguis (Huesca), which will be held on May 7th.

The Island Councilor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, considers it “excellent news that the Tenerife Bluetrail, the highest mountain race in Spain, has been chosen as a benchmark event that gives runners the opportunity to participate in the World Championships because, in addition, it means that the race will attract the best Spanish runners in the discipline. This will once again make the island an excellent showcase for Tenerife’s potential as an ideal destination for outdoor sports and also as an organizer of major sporting events.”

The Course

The Tenerife Bluetrail race chosen by the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing (FEDME) to select the runners who will form part of the Spanish ultra team in Ossola is the Trail, a 73-kilometer course with 2,880 meters of elevation gain.

The course includes more than 30 kilometers above 2,000 meters, a feature that sets it apart from other races held in Spain. The race starts in the town of Vilaflor, from where the runners will head into the Corona Forestal Natural Park along the Camino Real de Chasna, a route with over 500 years of history that crosses the island from south to north.

Participants will pass very close to the Lunar Landscape and, later, from the Degollada de Guajara pass – at approximately 2,500 meters altitude – they will head towards the Parador hotel before continuing on to Las Cañadas del Teide along trails that cross volcanic lava flows. The route then passes through Los Picachos, La Caldera de La Orotava, the mountains of Santa Úrsula, and the beaches of Ancón, Los Patos, and Bollullo, finishing at the finish line located in Lago Martiánez in Puerto de la Cruz.

The Tenerife Bluetrail 2022, which has already reached 1,753 registered participants, has sold out its 700 available spots in the Half Marathon and is close to doing so in the Marathon, which is already 92% full. There are still places available in the Ultra and Trail races, which will have 500 participants each, as well as in the Relay Trail and the Vertical race, with 100 pairs and 200 runners, respectively.
