The iconic Tenerife race, which will hold its next edition from June 2nd to 5th, already has a thousand registered participants

The Tenerife Bluetrail 2022, a race organized by the Tenerife Island Council through the public company Ideco, will once again have the endorsement of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), the world’s most prestigious race in this discipline. This year, the UTMB is replacing the traditional points system with a race ranking based on distance and elevation gain.

The Minister of Sports, Concepción Rivero, explains that the fact that the Tenerife Bluetrail has this international endorsement “is a great incentive to attract runners from all over the world who, moreover, have the opportunity to participate in a unique race, the highest in Spain, which takes place in a unique environment, as is the case with the routes that cross Teide National Park, a World Heritage Site.”

Thus, the Ultra and Trail routes (104 and 73 kilometers, respectively) of the Tenerife race will be included in the 100-kilometer category, while the marathon (44 kilometers) and the second runner in the Trail Relay (48 kilometers) will receive a 50-kilometer validation, which will be 20 kilometers in the case of the Half Marathon (24 kilometers) and the first athlete in the Trail Relay (25 kilometers). After finishing the race, runners will receive a UTMB performance index in the corresponding distance category.

The Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc, considered the world’s most prestigious trail running race, is a mountain ultramarathon held in the Alps, crossing France, Italy, and Switzerland. The most significant event of this race, which will take place from August 22nd to 28th, covers a distance of approximately 171 kilometers with a positive elevation gain of around 10,000 meters.

Rivero highlights that “the Tenerife Bluetrail, to be held from June 2nd to 5th, already has a thousand registered participants across its various categories, which gives an idea of the interest the race generates among athletes.” The councilor notes that the Tenerife race “will debut new routes this year, including a novel finish line in Puerto de la Cruz passing by El Ancón, Los Patos, and El Bollullo beaches, and the marathon starting from the Basilica of Candelaria, among other new features.”

The race features seven modalities in its next edition: the Ultra, of 104 kilometers; the Trail, with a distance of 73 kilometers, which also has a relay modality with sections of 25 and 48 kilometers; Marathon, with a total route of 44 kilometers; Half, which covers a distance of 24 kilometers, and the Bluetrail Challenge for people with disabilities, which includes three distances of 7, 5 and 1 kilometers, in addition to the 5.25 kilometer night vertical race that will be held on June 2.
