The main event of Tenerife Bluetrail will start for the first time from El Médano beach, in Granadilla

The Ultra category of the Tenerife Bluetrail, the flagship event of Spain’s highest race, will start for the first time from El Médano beach, heading towards Montaña Pelada in the municipality of Granadilla. This route will showcase one of Tenerife’s most important tourist destinations and one of the island’s most unique natural landscapes.

In recent years, the race’s starting arch has been located on Fañabé beach (Adeje), but a recent amendment to Article 80 of the Canary Islands Land Law now prohibits the race from passing through Barranco del Infierno, a protected natural area where organized competitive sporting activities are expressly forbidden.

The Island Councillor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, explains that “this situation has forced us to design an equally spectacular alternative route, such as the area around El Médano. There we will kick off the Ultra, a unique race in Europe that crosses the island from south to north, with a course that starts at sea level and climbs to an altitude of 3,555 meters.”

Concepción Rivero also expresses her gratitude for the ongoing collaboration of the Granadilla Town Council, “which has been involved from the beginning and has given us every possible assistance to ensure that the start of the Tenerife Bluetrail’s flagship race takes place on El Médano beach.”

The Ultra race, a 102-kilometer course, will skirt Montaña Pelada and pass through the Granadilla Industrial Park, Chimiche, and Las Vegas before reaching the Madre del Agua track, from where it will continue towards Teide National Park, culminating at the summit of La Rambleta. From there, the descent to the finish line at Lago Martiánez will begin, after passing by the beaches of El Ancón, Los Patos, and El Bollullo, another new addition to this year’s race.

The Tenerife Bluetrail 2022, organized by the Island Council through Ideco, will pass for the first time through the municipalities of Candelaria, La Matanza, La Victoria, and Santa Úrsula. There, the race will traverse the Sanguinos Grove, a unique and ecologically valuable area in the Canary Islands, characterized by laurel forest species that have grown together to form a peculiar and unusual woodland. Vilaflor, La Orotava, Granadilla, and Puerto de la Cruz complete the list of municipalities that will host the next edition.

The next edition of the race, which has already reached 1,895 registered participants, has sold out all 700 available places for the Half Marathon and Marathon. There are still places available in the Ultra and the Trail, which will have 500 participants, as well as for the Trail Relays and the Vertical, with 100 pairs and 200 runners, respectively.
