Researcher Ana Belén Peinado will give two talks at CIAT on sports and women

The Tenerife Island Council, through its Sports Department, has scheduled a full calendar of educational and sports activities for the month of April to commemorate Sports and Health Month, “highlighting its strategic plan, Tenerife Activa, whose mission is to increase the number of active people on the island, regardless of their age or fitness level,” notes the island’s Sports Councilor, Yolanda Moliné.

Thus, next Sunday, April 6, is International Day of Physical Activity and Sport, and Monday, April 7, is World Health Day—“a fundamental pairing that underpins much of the island’s institution’s policy initiatives regarding physical activity and sport,” Moliné notes.

On April 4 and 5, Ana Belén Peinado Lozano, a nationally and internationally renowned researcher in the field of sports and health—specifically in exercise physiology—who specializes in issues related to the endocrine system and the menstrual cycle, will visit Tenerife for the first time.

Peinado holds a Ph.D. in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences from the Polytechnic University of Madrid; she is a tenured professor at that university, director of the Exercise Physiology Laboratory (LFE), and head of the Female Physiology research line at this laboratory and of the LFE Research Group.

The Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT) in Tíncer, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will host two educational events led by Dr. Peinado. First, as part of the “Educar Entrenando” program, she will lead a training workshop titled “The Menstrual Cycle and Youth Sports” on Friday , April 4, at 5:00 p.m., aimed at the entire island’s sports community. Later, on Saturday, April 5, in the morning from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., she will lead a workshop on “The Influence of Hormones on the Health and Performance of Active Women,” as part of the Women and Sports Conference.

Women and Sport Program
Yolanda Moliné also announced that the Women and Sport program will expand its offerings in April with a workshop on “Pelvic Floor and Hypopressive Exercises,” which will take place on April 12 at the Sports Service of the University of La Laguna, and a “Functional Training for Young People and Women” session, which will be held on April 26. All of these activities are specifically designed to promote sports participation among young people and women aged 14 and over.

Educar Entrenando
In addition, the Educar Entrenando program has also developed a plan of action aimed at Tenerife’s sports community. On April 21, the Educar Entrenando School will hold a new training session on “Safe Sports Environments and Respectful Treatment in Youth Sports,” focused on implementing measures to protect children and adolescents in compliance with the Organic Law on Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents Against Violence (LOPIVI), while on April 29 it will present the “Guide for Incorporating a Gender Perspective into Sporting Events.” In addition, throughout the month of April, the training initiative “Planning Educational Training Sessions” will continue in the northern, southern, and metropolitan areas, with the goal of incorporating educational elements into training programs as an essential component for achieving the objectives set forth by this program.

The programs developed in Tenerife’s schools— “Escuelas Activas” and “Recreos Activos”—have also proposed special activities to highlight the importance of fostering active and healthy lifestyle habits among schoolchildren. The Island Council is also encouraging all schools to join in the celebration of “Physical Education Day in the Street” on April 10, an initiative promoted by the COLEF Council that this year focuses on inclusion and how physical education can be a driving force for integration for everyone, regardless of their abilities.

Master Games and Cabildo Games
For its part, the Master Games program, aimed at people over 30, will celebrate Physical Activity and Sports Day on Sunday , April 6, with a hike through Anaga, which was designated in 2022 as the “kilometer zero” zone for vascular flora by the International Committee of the World Biological Corridor, as it is home to the highest concentration of endemic species in all of Europe and boasts many protected species that are endemic and unique to this region. In addition, April 26 will mark the debut of the orienteering event in this year’s festival, with a day of activities taking place in the Las Raíces Recreational Area.

Finally, the Tenerife Island Council’s longest-running sports program, the Cabildo Games—now in its 38th year—will feature a total of 17 sports over the four weekends in April, including some finals, such as those for badminton and handball.
