A total of 220 athletes are participating in this international track and field tournament that pays tribute to the legendary Tenerife runner Francis Pérez, who will participate in the 400-meter race.
The Island Councillor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, yesterday welcomed athletes Francis Pérez, Gema Martí, Lorenzo Hernández, and Manuel Fajardo, a member of the Tenerife Runners Club, organizer of the 13th Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Meeting. The Island Director of Sports, Laura Castro, also participated in the reception.
This year’s event, which takes place today, Wednesday the 21st, starting at 5:00 PM at the Tenerife Island Athletics Center (CIAT), will feature a total of 220 athletes and will pay tribute to Tenerife native Francis Pérez.
Concepción Rivero highlighted “the high level of this international tournament, which attracts increasingly top-level athletes each year,” and congratulated Francis Pérez on his sporting achievements, calling him “an example for all the people of Tenerife.”
Francis Pérez, an active athlete from Santa Cruz who began competing in 1990 and is currently a masters athlete, was a standout in the 400 meters and a twelve-time Canary Islands champion.
At this meet, the throwing, jumping, and running events will take center stage. Competitions will be held in the discus, javelin, and hammer throws; the long jump and triple jump; and the 100, 400, 800, 1500, and 110-meter hurdles, in addition to the 50, 60, and 80-meter sprints.
