CIAT Hosts the Island Finals for Ultimate Frisbee and Track and Field at the Inter-Center Meet

The Tenerife Island Council, through the Department of Sports, is organizing the Island Final of the Inter-Center Ultimate Frisbee Tournament this Tuesday, June 16, at the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT).

As part of the Deporte Joven program, this initiative aims to promote motivation and regular physical activity among adolescents, thereby improving students’ physical, mental, and social well-being and health.

Since early April, a total of 34 high schools on the island have participated in a total of 14 tournament days through various qualifying rounds. In total, 1,386 students have had the opportunity to learn about and become familiar with this team sport, which is known for its dynamic nature, the lack of physical contact, and the fact that it is played with a Frisbee.

Furthermore, the absence of referees in this sport fosters a “spirit of the game,” which holds that players are responsible for enforcing and abiding by the rules, even in competition. They are expected to play with sportsmanship, mutual respect, and joy, and to intentionally avoid dangerous play. These are many values to keep in mind, and they make ultimate a sport with educational value linked to honesty, self-regulation, and individual and collective responsibility.

Ultimately, students learn to resolve conflicts peacefully and constructively by negotiating rule disputes with their opponents, which helps them develop essential mediation skills.

The event will feature these eight finalist teams/schools: IES Viera y Clavijo and IES Canarias Cabrera Pinto in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, IES El Chapatal in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, IES Manuel Martín González in Guía de Isora, IES Lucas Martín Espino in Icod de Los Vinos, IES Santa Úrsula, IES La Victoria – Alfonso Fernández García, and IES Tacoronte-Óscar Domínguez.

Track and field is up this Wednesday

In addition, this Wednesday, June 17, the Island Track and Field Finals—the other sport included in the Inter-School Competitions of the Youth Sports program—will be held at the same sports facility. In this discipline, 20 high schools participated, with a total of 760 students in their first year of high school.

More specifically, the following schools have qualified for this final day of competition on the track: IES Las Veredillas in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, IES Canarias Cabrera Pinto in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, IES Lucas Martín Espino in Icod de Los Vinos, IES Punta Larga in Candelaria, IES Tacoronte-Óscar Domínguez, IES San Miguel, and IES Los Realejos.
