This year, there will be 15 sports events spread over 40 days, with more than 3,000 people participating
The Tenerife Island Council, through its Sports Department, is launching a new edition of the Master Games program, with the goal of promoting physical activity and sports among the island’s adult population through an attractive series of events that will fill weekends with fun, health, and plenty of physical activity. The program was presented today, March 10, in the Cabildo’s Salón Noble by the island’s Sports Councilor, Yolanda Moliné, and the head of the Sports Administrative Services Unit, Samuel González.
Moliné noted that the 8th Masters Games have seen growth compared to previous editions, which will allow for an increase in the number of sports and is expected to result in record participation of more than 3,000 people.
Thus, today, Monday, March 10, registration opens for the first hiking event, which begins on Sunday, March 23. Due to the high demand seen in previous years, the program has been expanded this year to include 9 events, through which we aim to promote physical activity in a responsible manner within our natural environment, showcasing some of the spectacular hidden corners of our island.
In addition to this activity, which is already a established part of the master’s program, 14 other activities will take place over the coming weekends through the end of November. Most of them are returning activities, such as mountain bike touring, road cycling, track and field, badminton, orienteering, paddleboarding, kayaking, tai chi, table tennis, trail running, and yoga, in addition to the obstacle course, which made its debut last year. Added to these are three new activities this year: chess, Canarian ball, and Nordic walking, in an effort to attract a diverse range of participants through a more varied and comprehensive program, which will total 40 sessions and 15 sports, Moliné notes.
The Tenerife Island Council continues to strengthen its strategic plan “Tenerife Activa,” specifically through its second pillar, “Active People,” by increasing the resources allocated to the Masters Games program. Under the slogan “Live Your Masters Experience,” this year’s edition aims to continue encouraging people to try out various sports through events and workshops where fun, socializing, and camaraderie will guide the experience. In many cases, this represents participants’ first exposure to the sports offered, so training in technical aspects is provided to enable them to continue practicing these sports in the future.
Of course, this program could not be implemented without the tremendous support provided by the island’s various municipal governments, which serves as a clear example of intergovernmental cooperation.
Finally, we would like to thank La Fast once again for its support this year; the company will be providing healthy refreshments on each and every day of the event.
Please note that all of these sports events are open to people over the age of 30, who can register for free for each event starting on the Monday of the week before it takes place, through the website www.deportestenerife.es.
