The Island Council Triples Funding for Sports Clubs’ Youth Programs

Friday, 05 June 2020

The planned subsidies, which have already been approved by the Governing Council, total more than 923,000 euros

The Governing Council of the Tenerife Island Council approved this week the regulations and call for applications for grants intended to support the youth academies of the island’s sports clubs this year, with a budget of 923,500 euros, a figure that is nearly triple the amount allocated for this purpose last year. This measure to support the youth programs of sports clubs is part of the pact for the social and economic revitalization of Tenerife.

The Island Councilor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, explains that “with this grant program, we aim to support the work and dedication of sports clubs and organizations toward their youth programs, helping to cover part of the costs they incur in relation to their youth teams, such as sports licenses and insurance for athletes under 18 in various sports; sports materials and equipment for youth programs; and the services of certified referees.”

“players in youth competitions or collaboration with coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, physical therapists, nutritionists, and sports psychologists, among other professionals, with a special focus on youth sports.”

This call for proposals introduces a significant change compared to previous ones: on the one hand, sports organizations dedicated to indigenous and traditional sports and motor games of the Canary Islands are not included, since a separate grant program specifically for them was created this year; and, on the other hand, sports clubs in Tenerife that participate in soccer and basketball are now eligible to apply for this grant.

The island director of Sports, Laura Castro, highlights “the commitment and support of the Tenerife Island Council to athletes in the face of this new and very difficult situation we are facing, recognizing the important work that our sports clubs contribute to Tenerife society, and more specifically, to the people who will one day represent the future of Tenerife, by training and educating them in values and promoting active and healthy lifestyles that will last.”
