Monday, 25 April 2022

The competition was held at the Tenerife Athletics Center, with more than 200 athletes in attendance

British, German, and Irish athletes put on a spectacular show at the 14th Santa Cruz de Tenerife Track and Field Meet, held Friday at the CIAT. But individually, it was German sprinter Laura Müller who drew the most attention in the 100- and 200-meter races, which she won with impressive times of 11.69 and 23.66.

Icelandic discus thrower Guni Gunnarson defeated two other top athletes—Colombia’s Mauricio Ortega and Ecuador’s Juan Caicedo, both Olympians—with a throw of 61.20 meters.

Britain’s Jessica Hunter won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.81, followed by Merli Jessop (13.91), both of whom posted impressive times. Another British athlete, Jessica Tapping, won the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.15, with Zoe Pollock putting in a strong performance (56.59). Tapping also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a brilliant time of 24.72.

The men’s sprint events were also spectacular, with victories by Conor Morey (10.90) of Ireland in the 100-meter dash, Jordan Brown (21.49) of Great Britain in the 200-meter dash, and Dan Putnam (48.87) in the 400-meter dash.

Among the athletes from the Canary Islands, Raúl Martín stood out, finishing second in the 100 with a time of 10.97; Lucía Morera, third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.39; Emma García in the discus, who won with a throw of 43.74, and María Camacho from La Palma in the 3,000 meters (10.41).

During the event, veteran athlete Javier Sabina was honored and recognized with several awards. A member of Santacrucero and an athlete since 1980, he is a coach, executive, and contributor to CCT Santa Cruz, the organizer of the meet.
